Repair Credit Report To Reduce Your Money Stress
When To Repair Credit Report? | | Photo: sxc.hu | It is easy to preach and say that bad credit is a result of irresponsible money management. But in these tough economic times, it may occur because of unexpected financial misfortune. One day you might have all of your bills current, and the next day you could lose your job or have your salary down scaled. And if you fall behind on your debts, it will wreak havoc on your credit rating. If this happens in your life, and you are left with a bad credit remark in your credit report, what can you do, what are the alternatives open to you to repair credit report? You may take the help of credit repair agencies to get removed bad entries from your credit report. But you should be aware that you can often have them removed yourself at a much lower cost. Here I will talk about two options available to you to get negative entries removed from your report. 1. File a Dispute To Repair Credit Report The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires credit bureaus to investigate any item on your credit report that you dispute. If the information is found to be false, inaccurate or unverifiable, it must be corrected or removed from your report. A dispute is certainly in order if there is any inaccurate information on your credit report. You are required to simply write a letter to each of the credit bureaus that you dispute an entry: you are not required to give any explanation. Of course, if the entry is verified to be correct, it will remain on your report. The bureaus have 30 days from the time they receive notice of the dispute to complete their investigation. If such items are not verified by the creditor (or the court in the case of judgments) within the time limit for investigation, they must be removed. And if the creditor verifies the information after the 30-day time limit, the credit bureau may reinstate the entry as long as they notify you at least 5 days before doing so. 2. Negotiate To Repair Credit Report It might be unpleasant and sometimes intimidating starting a negotiation with the creditors, especially if you're not on good terms with them. But keep in mind that speaking to your creditors directly may help you get negative information removed from your credit report. And since this is very important for you, it is better to approach them after a little planning and home work. If the negative remark in your credit reports was created only due to one or two late payments, a creditor might be willing to remove the unfavorable remark once you resume a regular payment schedule. If you've experienced repossession or had an account turned over to collections, payment in full might persuade them to remove the negative entry. It sounds like a long shot, but you never know until you ask. Requests to remove late payment information may be made after you've brought you account current. But in your efforts to repair credit report, if you're hoping for removal of a repossession or collection action, it's best to negotiate a deal before you pay anything. If It Is Not Possible To Repair Credit ReportYou have tried disputing, you have tried negotiating-- but what if you are not able to get negative items removed from your record? The best thing you can do is try to build up some positive information on your report. The first thing you need to do when trying to rebuild good credit is bringing past due accounts current. You may try to work out a deal with your creditors to accomplish this, or talk to a credit counseling agency. But it is advisable not to miss payments on current accounts in trying to put money toward those that are past due. If there is a choice between the two, keep the current account current. Once all your accounts have been brought current, make every effort to keep them that way. It will raise your credit score, and with the passage of time, the good entries may outweigh the bad ones.
