How to Relieve Stress When You Are Overwhelmed
Tips to Relieve StressFeeling overwhelmed is another way of saying that you are faced with a situation you feel incapable of handling. It is accompanied by misgivings about your abilities to manage the tasks at hand, or to manage them well. When you are deluged by too many demands from all sides, it is natural to feel stress and anxiety. There might be family and work obligations; extra-curricular activities for your kids; or unexpected situations. Under such situations, you start feeling out of balance and overwhelmed! You can make out that you are stressed out when you start getting irritated, suffer with bouts of anger, find that your mind has slowed down, get confused easily and take more than reasonable time to reach a decision. Your may not be able to sleep soundly; you might also suffer from tension headaches or high blood pressure. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it is time that you get hold of yourself, take stock of the situation, and take adequate steps to relieve stress, if you don't want to wreck your physical health and mental peace, and that of your immediate family members! There are many things you can do to relieve stress and achieve balance in your life. Below are some important points to get you on the road to a well-balanced life. 1. Start Using a Family CalendarWith Family Calendar, I mean such a calendar which is shared by all the family members. This calendar can be a shared calendar online using Google Calendar, or it can be a paper calendar stuck on the fridge. Either way, have all family members write their activities on the calendar which should include the time, location and mode of transportation. This way nothing gets missed and you can plan your schedule accordingly. If there are conflicting activities, this is a good time to teach your family about compromises and the give and take in relationships. There are ways to work things out and a little lesson in selflessness never hurt anyone. 2. Rationalize Your Commitments Are you overcommitted? Are there activities you can cut out to relieve stress and make your life more balanced? Due to your overly ambitious personality, you might have committed yourself to many activities. Think about all the activities you are involved in. As you look at each activity, ask yourself: - Is this activity necessary for my well being?
- Can I live without being involved in this activity?
- Is this improving my life or is this overwhelming me?
- Is this helping others or is it purely for self-gratification?
- Is this going to help me achieve my career, family, and personal goals?
The answers to these questions will help you clean up your schedule so that you are able to enjoy the things that are really important to you and your family.
3. Establish a Daily Routine. Routines relieve stress by helping us stay on task and get things done without procrastination. Without a daily routine, you tend to wander aimlessly, instead of engaging in tasks that take you down the right path toward your goals. Establishing a daily schedule is vital. Following a schedule will help you achieve your daily, monthly, and yearly goals. A weekly planner will help you to relieve stress by saving you time. Plan your visit to the grocery, the dentist, or the mechanic well in advance and plan your day's activities accordingly, and see how you are relieved of the stress of wasteful activities. 4. Set Goals for Yourself, Your Family and Your Career. Without goals, you have nothing to work for and you'll get lost. You can relieve stress greatly if you set goals for all areas of your life, and plan your activities accordingly. The revision of these goals from time to time is very important. You will be able to prevent yourself from wasting time in unnecessary activities.Make a list of all goals under various heads. To get you started, here is a suggestive list, which you can modify according to your needs- i) Financial Goals - income goals, purchasing of house or vehicle, becoming financially independent in next five years, starting your own business, etc. ii) Career Goals – The next promotion, change of job, acquiring of an important skill, etc. iii) Family Goals – Securing school admission for the child, going on a vacation, celebrating an important event in life, etc. Achieving balance to relieve stress in life is something that requires constant attention and resilience. But, at the end of the day, you are rewarded with ample time, a relaxed mind, and increased happiness for you and your entire family.
