Some Practical Ideas

Keep Money Stress In Check

During adverse economic conditions, like recession today, the key to financial freedom is living on a planned budget.

Easy as it sounds, starting can be really frustrating! Looking at our expenses and seeing all those bills we're paying every month, we feel like throwing our hands up in disgust—no, I can't do it!

But what about all those little expenses we incur? You might be surprised to find out just how much they amount to. You might dismiss the idea of cutting back on little things. You might say - a few dollars a month won't make a significant difference in the big picture.

Just remember, a few dollars here and a few dollars there add up to a few more dollars. When you cut back in a lot of small ways, you could end up with a lot more money at the end of the month.

Here, I am giving some ideas on saving money, which, on the face of it, look quite simple, but their cumulative effect can be a pleasant surprise. One of the important things is that you should develop a 'money consciousness'. I am sure that following suggestions will help you develop that mindset, and show you some ways to conquer money stress.

Money Stress Mantra: Waste Not

One thing we all can do that is good for the budget is stop wasting so much. This applies to many areas in our lives; waste equals our hard earned money going down the drain unnecessarily.

Cooking for the family instead of dining out is a great way to save money. But, the benefit is reduced if you are throwing out your food. If you have leftovers, don't trash them. Some dishes freeze well, you could use them to make easy dinners when you don't have time to cook. You could also eat dinner leftovers for lunch the following day.

Have you taken care to insulate your house well? If not, you're probably adding to your money stress, wasting lots of money on home heating and cooling. Insulating your house will cost some money up front, but it will pay for itself quickly. If you have drafts around windows and doors, weather stripping can help maintain the temperature of your home.

It is hard to believe how much households waste an unbelievable amount of electricity. This can be prevented in part by using energy efficient appliances and light bulbs and by being frugal in using electricity. Turn lights, televisions, computers and other devices off when you're not using them, and open blinds to take advantage of the sun's light during the day.

Combat Money Stress: Do It Yourself

Any time you pay someone else to do something that you could do yourself, you're spending money unnecessarily. This applies to all things: little things like buying coffee instead of making your own, or to larger expenses such as home repairs.

A little planning can help us save on many small expenses. Many of us buy coffee or a soft drink on the way to work in the morning. All this adds up over time. Instead, try to prepare your own coffee, or buy soda in 2-liter bottles and pour some into a smaller bottle or cup to take with you.

The same thing applies to your work lunches. Instead of spending on fast foods, take a sandwich or something else with you that you can prepare easily in the morning.

We might not be good at all types of repairs and maintenance, but we can definitely do some things for ourselves. Consider changing your own car oil instead of paying someone else to do it. If the walls need painting, consider getting friends and family to help you do it instead of hiring a painter. Things like these can save us a noticeable amount of money right away, and help us in keeping money stress away.

Little things add up to significant savings, if you become aware of this. So take a close look at your budget and see what avoidable small expenses are lurking there. Eliminate the ones that you can manage and see your bottom line moving up.

Can you see the clouds of money stress galloping away!
