The influence of positive thinking on the quality of life will become evident to you by one example. Just think of one person in your life whose entry into a group brightens the face of everyone.

If there was pessimism it starts giving way to optimism; if there was gloom, it makes way for contagious optimism. This kind of person brightens the lives of all around him, even if it is temporary. As leader, such a person is capable of bringing out the best in his team.

On the other hand, you must be familiar with a gloomy friend, who is always moaning about the lack of this or that. In her life there is nothing positive or uplifting, and society and life in general, is not worth living.

That's why it is said you should choose your friends carefully…And, thoughts too!

The mind is a running tape. The thoughts are like background music. They set the tone, the environment in which all future scenes will play themselves out.

If positive thinking is in short supply, and negative thoughts have taken hold of your life, then you are stuck in a vicious circle. Negative thinking increases stress, brings in anxiety, makes future look dark, and creates more negative feelings.

Here are some ways to incorporate use of positive thinking in your life.

Develop A Positivity Attitude

  • Rephrase: The moment you sense a negative thought entering into your mind, ask it to 'Stop!'; and change it to a positive one. Start with creating a Positive Hour in your routine: during that hour banish all negative thoughts: rephrase them all into positive ones.

    The general environment of your brain depends on the self-talk going on inside you. The self –talk determines your actions. Take steps to change that inner dialogue; it is not easy, and requires some hard work .

  • Avoid excessive self-criticism: If something goes wrong, don't criticize yourself for the negative outcome. Examine the role of external factors, and give them their blame. Sometimes circumstances may not turn out according to your expectations, but you may become overly self critical. This may not be justified.

    Wait for your time to come. The world does not progress according to your wishes. Situation may take a turn for the better when you have begun to believe it is too late now; conversely, you may encounter success when you are not even prepared for it. Remember you do not know everything. At no time it is too soon; and no time is too late.

    Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake. ~~ Victor Hugo

  • Seek positive, avoid negative people: Minimize your contact with negative and pessimistic associates. Our environment influences the way we think. I remember, once I was amongst a bunch of grumpy people, you know, the kinds who always moan, 'Oh, nothing is going to improve. Things are only going to get worse. Stock market will crash.'..And so forth.

    To my horror, after a few weeks I noticed that I also started getting thoughts of the same kind, and life started taking the shades of gray, though nothing had changed! But this is the power of influence…Slowly I brought myself out of the influence of these negative thought patterns, started regaining my habit of positive thinking, and started regaining balance.

    Avoid negative people for your life! This is my own experience that there are indeed some people who try to take their frustrations out on others. They bother you with their negative behavior. Keep miles away from them, avoid them like plague! Your interactions with them should be strictly work related. If they still try to heckle you, ask them to keep their poison to themselves. A little bluntness will keep plenty of heartburn away from your life.

    Seek out those who are living their lives with a purpose. I have observed that most such people are not influenced too much with the negativity.

  • Keep smiling: Psychologists discovered long back that your expressions and emotions are closely related. You cannot be happy and keep on a sad expression. Likewise, when you are feeling down, try to force a smile on your face, and keep it on for a few minutes. You will observe that slowly your mood will start lifting up.

    You can increase the quantum of positive thinking in your life by keeping a smile on your face. Apart form this, also try doing the following-

    1. Increase the use of positive word – like can, will, will try, do, possible, bright, etc.
    2. Avoid negative words – like sad, bad, cannot, will not, not possible, bleak, etc.
  • Love Yourself: The person who doesn't love himself, cannot love his neighbor. How true!

    You may have tried everything to make use of positive thinking and attitude in your life, but all your efforts seem to go waste. Could it be that you do not think very high of your own self. You do not consider yourself worthy of good things in life. If there is a saboteur sitting inside you, all your efforts put together are not going to bear any fruits. Because, here the enemy is within – and it is your low self esteem.

    Friend, identify the symptoms of low self esteem, and take steps to heal your inner self.

As I said above, keep in mind that you want to remain positive. Don't keep focus on negative things for too long. Do things that will keep on reminding you that you want to become a man (or woman) of positive thinking. Else, it is too easy to slip back into the daily grind, and forget about all the positive change that you want to bring about in your life.
