Why Improving Self Esteem Is Important

People are not born with low self esteem; it is an acquired feeling. We go through periods of low and high self esteem during our lifetime. You may develop low self esteem on being treated poorly by someone. Prolonged periods of stress and tension also engender this feeling. It can lead to depression; though, to make matters complicated, it is sometimes a symptom of depression. So, if you are suffering from depression, it is important to see your doctor for the right diagnosis.

Low self esteem does not let you enjoy your life. You are doubtful and critical about each and every small step that you take, you are always looking for approval from others, you are not optimistic about the future, you cannot protest when you are being mistreated by others, and you are unhappy with yourself, your job, your spouse, your kids and with life in general.

All your achievements and accomplishments are of no use if you are unhappy and discontented-- you must take steps for improving self esteem. You have a right to feel great about yourself and achieve happiness in life.

Always keep the following statement in mind -

"I am a very special, unique, and valuable person. I deserve to feel good about myself."

You can take the help of Building Self Esteem, a self help hypnosis program. I will return to it later on.

You can start building self esteem by doing some activities, which we are giving below, and making them a part of your lifestyle. They will help foster in your mind a positive image about you, which is the core of self esteem.

  • Reward yourself: You are a great person. Reward yourself for something that you have done, or for just being yourself. Reward may be something material, like eating an ice cream, or something non material, like going for a walk or listening to music.

  • Learn something new: You may attend some evening classes, or take a course to acquire some new or improve an existing skill.

  • Choose an appreciative company: Try to remain in the company of people with whom you feel good, and who appreciative you as a person. Avoid falling in the trap of enjoying the company of people who justify and reinforce your fears and "perceived" limitations. Avoid the company of those who don't treat you well. Prefer people who respect you, and it will help you in improving self esteem.

  • Make your living space a tribute to you: Make your living space – living room, apartment, etc. – comfortable and attractive. Keep some space exclusively for you, where you can relax without getting disturbed. Decorate your place with beautiful things.

  • Make your meals a special time: Enjoy your meals without the distractions of television or radio. Arrange your food in a decorative way on the plate. Place a candle or flowers in the center of the table. Avoid discussions at meal times; unpleasant topics should be complete no-no.

  • Do the things that make you feel good about yourself: If you are overweight go on a diet. Eat only healthy food. Start regular workouts, start going for walks. Keep your surroundings clean and pleasant.

  • Do one good deed daily, at least: Smile at a person who is sad, help your spouse with a boring chore, take flowers to a sick friend. Say thanks to the counter girl. If possible, join an organization where you can do something for others or society at large.

For improving self esteem, make it a practice to treat yourself well everyday. While going to bed at night write down on a notebook how you have treated yourself well during the day.
