How To Relieve Stress Before It Hurts You

Say No To Stress!

~Article by- Stephanie Teskers

The Stress Problem

Stress is a somewhat sneaky problem, and that may be why we have an annual Stress Awareness Month each April.

Stress is linked to many maladies that land people in the hospital. The question of whether or not you’re stressed isn’t all guesswork. There are plenty of identifiable signs that clearly indicate a person is under stress.

The good news is that you aren’t necessarily a helpless victim. It’s entirely possible to just say no to stress.

The inimitable fact about stress is that it is irrefutable proof of a mind-body connection. When your mind perceives stress, whether mild or extreme, the body reacts. If the stress were a physical danger, such as touching a hot burner on a stove, the physical response is to quickly remove the hand. That’s a very healthy form of stress. But when the stress is emotional, the body is negatively affected.

A lot of symptoms have been identified as sure signs of stress, including:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Moodiness
  • Headaches
  • Loss of memory
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Overreacting in response to minor events
  • More frequent smoking
  • Increased alcohol consumption

How To Relieve Stress

If you have any of these or other signs and symptoms of stress, for the sake of your health, don’t ignore the warning signals. The medical community overwhelmingly agrees that stress is a key contributing factor in the development of many illnesses and diseases, including:

  • Heart problems
  • Stroke
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • The circulatory system
  • Infections (caused by a weakened immune system)
  • Diabetes

The facts prove that stress should be taken very seriously. If you are under stress, you can take actions to reduce it.

It helps to acknowledge that stress originates with your emotional response to events. Make it a practice to take notice of what sparks stressful reactions in you. Sort out, with each source of irritation, whether you can overcome it with a simple change of attitude.

For example, if a particular traffic intersection causes you frustration every day, view the traffic delay as an opportunity to relax and enjoy an audio book. If that strategy doesn’t work, perhaps you can change your route and avoid the intersection completely.

If there’s no way to get around a particular stressful situation, accept the situation, practice relaxation techniques, and shift your focus to the exercise. Try deep breathing exercises. Or turn your neck to each side as far as it will go comfortably and then relax. Tense your shoulder and back muscles for a few seconds and then relax.

Leisure and relaxation need to be mixed in with the balance of your life routine. Relaxation is essential to alleviating stress. Engage in both passive and active leisure. Examples of passive leisure are: enjoying a hot bath, watching a movie, and listening to music. Active leisure includes: playing recreational sports, exercising, and doing yard work.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is extremely important to physical and emotional health. Lack of sleep creates all kinds of stress. If you’re having problems sleeping, analyze your habits to see what may be contributing to the problem. Moderate exercise shouldn’t be done within three hours of going to bed because it energizes the body. Do you need to eliminate caffeine from you diet in order to get to sleep? Drink some type of caffeine-free sleepy time tea.

Say no to stress by taking steps to eliminate it:

  • Identify your personal limitations and refuse to take on more than you can handle
  • Avoid people and situations that consistently cause you stress
  • Analyze your activities and cut out whatever you can in order to slow down and enjoy life more
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Laugh every day
