When anxiety and stress surround you, you might feel an overpowering fear clouding your heart and mind.

Often in such situations, you try to listen to your inner voice to get an idea about the right course of action.

Of course, it is important for all of us to be able to trust our inner voice. But there are times when emotions cloud our thinking and it might not be wise to do so.

You must learn to distinguish the genuine inner voice and the one which has been colored by the effect of fear!

Fear is an emotion nobody likes dealing with. But, the flip side is if you don't learn to deal with fear it has many ways of fooling you and forcing you to take wrong decisions which might prove detrimental for your future growth; although in the short run such solutions might look very enticing.

During many of life's tough situations, when we are beset with anxiety and stress, our inner voice guides us correctly. When thing are not quite clear, our intuitive judgment shows us the path.

But you should learn to recognize those situations where your mind might not be giving you the right signals. For arriving at the right judgment, it helps to understand when your mind cannot be trusted. You will do well not to trust your thoughts in the following scenarios:

  1. Stressful periods – You may not realize the effect of stress on your body and mind. Stress can cause you to make unwise decisions. Stress affects your ability to think clearly, you are liable to follow illogical lines of thought which you will not realize at that time. So make it a rule: avoid taking hasty decisions when you are stressed.

  2. Phases of fear and anxiety – Intermittent phases of fear and anxiety are normal to occur in anybody's life. As such there is nothing to fear from anxiety per se. But, when the quantum of anxiety is too much, then you might not be able to think clearly. When anxiety overpowers you, and you have to deal with crippling effect of fear, it can lead to erratic, irrational thoughts and panic. Without your realizing it, fear could be dictating your thoughts.

  3. Phases of depression– Sometimes, when you have a bad day or a bad week, you might be passing through a depressed phase. Having a tough time can cause a negative thinking pattern that can cause you to think unreasonable or even absurd thoughts. You may start to have angry or depressing thoughts that can't be trusted.

When you start noticing that thoughts are becoming consistently negative, and future looks only bleak, remember that it's not coming from the real you. Rather, it's coming from prolonged periods of self-doubt, negativity, anxiety and stress; and due to your past circumstances.

Dealing With Irrational Negativity

You must have noticed that periods of depression, anxiety and stress cause you to think negatively. Such emotions make you look at future in a way that makes it look more pessimistic than it actually is. Crippling fear hurls many strongly negative feelings your way. But how you deal with them makes all the difference.

Take time to cool down, relax your mind, and consult with your well wishers, before making important decisions.

Sitting over a decision for a few days might make you look at the situation more rationally. For example, if after a week of thinking something over, you still think the same way, then it might well be true.

Ways To Neutralize The Effect Of Fear

If you are frequently experiencing the feelings of fear and anxiety, or if you are suffering from generalized anxiety, you should take steps to heal your self of these negative feelings, and to neutralize the effect of fear from your heart and mind.

  • Proper Breathing: As a first step, take note of the way you are breathing. During periods of anxiety and stress, you start breathing in small, quick breathes. This causes levels of oxygen to go down in your body, and further increases anxiety and fear.

Practice deep breathing exercise: it will instantly relax you and make your mind clearer.

  • Friends And Network: Another important step is to actively seek support from your friends and family. Just sharing your thoughts with someone, who, you know is, listening sympathetically is enough to reduce your anxiety and stress. Sharing your fears and apprehensions has the power to cause you to think more clearly.

When you keep your negative feelings all bottled up inside you, they have a tendency to feed on themselves, and they keep on growing. If you are not able to talk comfortably with a family member or friend, consider the help of a coach or counselor.

Just remember to avoid taking drastic actions that arise from fear, anxiety and stress. Take your time when making decisions, breathe deeply, and seek the help you need to overcome the overpowering effect of fear.
