Building Self Esteem To Lower Stress Levels

Simple Things You Can Do Every Day

Building Self Esteem: Why Is It So Important?

Low self esteem becomes a major cause of stress and anxiety for the sufferer. This is something which is woven into life's very fabric; as such, it affects each and every aspect of your life: oftentimes it creates problems whose origin it might be difficult to trace to the self esteem problem.

So it becomes really important that you don't ignore or deny it, and start to improve low self esteem. It can be done, let us show you how you can start right away by doing a few things every day.

Taking Good Care Of Self

  • Listen To Your needs and wants. You must listen to what your body and mind are saying to you. You start by trusting your inner voice; then acting accordingly. If your body is craving for some rest, take rest; if your mind is nagging you to complete some neglected chore, do it; if your heart is pulling you to meet an old friend, pay heed, pick up the phone and talk to the friend, or better go and meet him or her.

  • Take Good Care of Yourself. When you were a child, the best thing that you could do was to obey commands were given to you, and to be an ideal child in the eyes of your elders. From this moment on, start taking good care of yourself— just as a loving parent will take care of his child, or you would take care of your best friend.

  • Eat Healthy: Eat the food that is good for your health, avoid junk food. Generally the foods that contain lots of salt, sugar, caffeine or fat, are not good for health.

  • Exercise: Doing any kind of physical activity generates a feeling of well being. When you exercise, you are taking good care of yourself—the very essence of high self esteem. Choose an activity that is to your liking – it may be jogging, or taking a walk in the park; you may workout in the gym, or take part in a sport; you start bicycling or dance to the tune of your favorite music.

  • Body Care: Take care of personal hygiene, take regular baths, comb your hair properly, take care of your teeth. Get yourself examined once a year to ensure that you are keeping good health.

  • Fun and Enjoyment: Indulge in activities that you enjoy. Pursue your hobby. Learn new things every day. Make a list of things that you enjoy doing – fishing, cooking, knitting, reading, listening to music, movies, dance, etc. Then do one of these things everyday. Keep on adding to this list some new things that you enjoy.

  • Attend to un-finished tasks: Unknowingly, we add to the mental clutter by postponing some small chores that need to be done. Attend to the small things and finish them: this might look trivial, but is important for maintaining and building self esteem.

  • Doing things that make use of your talents: If you are good with your hands, make something for your friends and family members. You may be good in cooking, in paper craft, wood work, home decoration, arranging parties – anything: make these qualities useful for helping others.

  • Dress in clothes that make you look good: Select clothes that look good on you. Give due attention to dressing up well. Groom yourself well for building self esteem.
