Three Part Breathing Exercise – Deerga Swasa

Three part breathing exercise makes you utilize your lungs to their full capacity. It is also known as Deerga Swasa in Pranayama.

This breathing technique has a calming affect on your mind. It helps you feel relaxed and in-control during periods of worries and stress. It oxygenates and detoxifies your body.

This is called three part breathing exercise because breathing is divided into three parts–

1. Lower abdomen,

2. Lower chest, and,

3. Upper chest.

Pranayama is normally done while sitting cross-legged. But, in the beginning, practice it while you are lying on a flat surface. You will find it easier and more comfortable. Keep your knees slightly raised.

Start by inhaling slowly through your nostrils, filling up your abdomen. Feel your abdomen rising while doing so.

When your belly is filled up, let the incoming breath fill up the lower chest, and let your rib cage expand.

Now, slowly let the remaining breath fill up the upper chest. You should feel as if your lungs are completely filled up with here. Please take care that you do not apply any force. The lungs should be comfortably filled up, without exerting any force.

After a very brief pause, start exhaling in the reverse order.

Exhale out of your upper chest. Then lower chest—you will experience your rib cage closing in; and finally the lower abdomen. Pull your abdomen in to completely empty your lungs.Repeat the process five times. Take a break, and then practice this breathing technique for 10 breaths.

In the beginning you will find practicing three part breathing exercise difficult, as you have to concentrate on your breathing all the time. But, practicing it daily will make it easier.
