How Does Stress Affect a Person....How It Affects You?
The way the stress affects a person depends a lot on his or her perspective of the situation. You feel it when you feel challenged and called upon to bring additional resources to deal with the situation. What is stressful for one might not be so for the other person. Moreover, whatever is stressful for a person at one time might not be so for the same person some other time. It affects a person to the degree of control he believes he has over the situation. Either you believe that you can cope or you feel that you can’t. If you feel you can, you get energized and work at your peak level. When you feel that the situation is spinning out of control, you feel depressed and drained of all energy. Stress is there in both the situations. It effects positively in one case, negatively in another. When you feel the rush of adrenaline in your body, when you are excited and thrilled, even if a bit unsure, when you feel that this is an opportunity where you will prove yourself, the stress is positive. When you feel overwhelmed, when you feel helpless, when you wish that it would have been better had you been somewhere else, the stress is negative. You are distressed. It is a matter of perception. You might be aware of certain occasions when stress prompted you to concerted action. It could be your school examinations. That stress drove you made you perform that you surpassed even your own expectations. Or, at your workplace, you might have noticed how the impending visit of a senior boss motivates the whole staff to work at a higher level of efficiency. It is also a matter of attitude. So, stress is not bad after all. Imagine that stress were not there. Will you feel motivated? Will you feel energized? I think not: life after all, thrives on stress. It is exactly like the tension of strings on a guitar. If the strings are loose, guitar produces a groaning sound. When the tightness is just right, it sings beautifully. If you tighten the strings still further, the guitar starts shrieking! Stress increases your effectiveness up to a point reaching a peak level at a certain level. Then, efficiency decreases steeply with every small increase in stress. Just prior to the peak efficiency point lies the comfort zone. The way the stress affects a person depends also on her level of self esteem. A person with a high level of self esteem handles a stressful situation in a more balanced way. Your response to stress depends on you. There is always scope for change in the way you react to a stressful situation. You can learn to adapt. While commuting to your workplace in the morning you can work yourself up to a frenzy thinking of all the jostling you have to go through and worrying about getting late. Or, you can put a stop to all the hurrying thoughts in your mind and take it as a break: listen to music or some inspiring tape. I love one thing about local trains – they give me a chance to make up on my sleep!
